This week I have the pleasure of talking with Dan Donohue on the podcast. Dan is a Strength & Conditioning coach with the Cincinnati Reds organization.
We cover a lot of important topics in this interview. In the beginning, we talk about the difference between the different levels in the sport of baseball. For those high school athletes looking to step into higher levels, Dan gives some great, simple advice; create a regimen. You need to understand that this is what you want to do. Once you know this is your goal, this is when you can create a plan of action to develop over your time in the sport.
For the kids looking to move through the levels and make it to the pros, it's simple. You need to walk the walk. Setting these goals for yourself, and sticking to the plan of action is the only way to really continue to push through these levels. Even more important is when you're sore, when you're tired... you can still put that effort in. Be open with your coach and tell them you need to take it a little easier that day. If you have a coach worth anything... they need to be able to adapt to that.
Another key takeaway is Dan's analogy of the three people you will meet in sport. The guy who's better than you, the guy who's the same as you and the guy who is behind you trying to take your spot. Which should you be worrying about? We often get caught up in worrying about the guy who's better than us or the same, and forget that if we are not putting the time into ourselves, we will lose our spot to the guy behind us working every day to be better than us.
