Episode 52: Theo Fleury {Only 5% Of Playing At An Elite Level Is Your Ability}
Show Notes

This week I have the pleasure of bringing a true legend of the sport of hockey onto the show.  Theo Fleury has some of the biggest accomplishments in the history of the NHL despite being counted out before he ever made it to the league.

Theo's story started with having something to prove. Living with a father who was unable to fulfill his destiny in professional sport and then struggling financially was a huge motivating factor to not do the same thing.
A near immediate takeaway from this interview is his position in the NHL draft.  After not being picked in his first year of eligibility and finally being picked in the 8th round in his second year of eligibility, Theo finished 61st ALL-TIME in NHL scoring.  You don't need the "perfect" opportunity to make a career in sport. All you need is AN opportunity.

Easily the most important takeaway from talking with Theo is the importance of the mental strength of athletes.  5% of playing at an elite level is your ability.  Understanding how to properly train your brain is an extremely overlooked factor in developing elite level athletes.

Plain and simple though everyone. IF you are trying to build a career in sport, learning from a guy like Theo Fleury is an incredible opportunity.  Understanding not only what it takes to be an elite level player, but also understanding how to deal with adversity, how to overcome everything that happens in your life and continue to push forward and improve... These are lessons that EVERYONE can take something away from.
