This week I have the pleasure of interviewing 1000 game NHL veteran Matt Stajan. Matt and I had a great discussion about growing up in the hockey world. While so many athletes are concerned about playing on the top level teams or doing the right camps, or anything else of the sort, Matt discussed the benefits of the adversity he faced in his young hockey career. Getting cut from teams allowed him to learn early how to deal with adversity and move past it, which ended up helping him throughout his career in the NHL.
Matt also discussed the MASSIVE importance of physical preparation through his career. Talking about what separated the legends that he played with such as Mats Sundin, Joe Nieuwendyk and so many more was the extra work and intentionality that went into their careers. Extra rehabilitation work to be able to play when they were plagued by injuries, intensity in their training sessions and just overall dedication to their craft.
The overall tone of this interview is that how you make it to the top in your sport and make sure that you stay there is learning to go the extra mile. Don't be the athlete simply going through the motions, doing what is asked and hoping for the best. Be the one showing up early, going the extra mile and questioning what else you can be doing to continue to push further in your career.
