This week I have Tara McNeil on the show. Tara is a PHD student and Sport Performance Advisor. She has spent much of her career working with professional athletes in a variety of sport focusing on improving athletes Return On Investment in training.
So many athletes feel like the singular important element in training is putting in more hours. Tara does a great job in this interview of breaking down the importance of managing your training along with your rest, recovery, sleep, nutrition etc. etc. etc.
.
Also, when breaking down what really brought the top level athletes she has worked with above the rest, Tara just mentioned the love of the sport and support systems. It cannot be about chasing the glory, it needs to be about the love of the sport. As well, the support system was a crucial element she discussed. If your friends don't support you being great, they are NOT your friends. Surround yourself with people that want to see you succeed!
Tara also sheds light on an extremely important issue in elite level sport. Especially in the world today, the media is extremely influential. Being able to prepare yourself early for the difficulty of facing negativity in the media, in the fanbase of your team, etc. is extremely important. Learning to develop your emergency toolkit for dealing with the difficult side of sport is extremely important. This will only serve you well as you reach higher levels and face these more difficult situations.
Near the end we discuss finding your values. The more clear you can make these values the easier it becomes to make decisions.
.
