An incredibly important message from this conversation came early when Gil talks about becoming a 24/7 athlete and the evolution of what that phrase has meant to him over his career. In the beginning of his career it was about living and breathing speed skating. As his career progressed he began to understand that every athlete is different and in order for him to be successful he needed to be able to take himself out of the sport from time to time. This allowed him to relax and be less hardcore which in turn allowed him to focus on simply improving every session instead of trying to go hard all the time.
